Kathleen McCarthy, PGA
Golf has been a part of my life since I was a little girl.
In 1987 I became a Class A Member of the PGA of America. In 19888 I became the first woman in Tennessee to become a Head Golf Professional. I served as a Head Professional at Dorchester Golf Course and then Druid Hills Golf Course in Fairfield Glade, TN. Later, I resigned to play on the Futures Tour. I also became an Adjunct Faculty Member for the PGA Apprentice Program known as the Golf Professional Training Program.
In 1995, I started a 501 c 3 to promote golf to youngsters. In 1999, we became a chapter of The First Tee. Approximately 400 children were involved in the program on an annual basis. Numerous players earned college scholarships golf and academic scholarships. Three are currently Head Golf Professionals. In 2009, The First Tee of Chattanooga partnered with the University of Tennessee Chattanooga to build the Player Developement Complex. Together, we raised 1.3 million dollars to build the 28 acre practice facility and 3-hole loop on land owned by the City of Chattanooga, In 2022, I retired from my position with the First Tee of Tennessee.
During my time with The First Tee i was dedicated to gaining as much knowledge as possible. I was a member of the first class of Recognized Coaches, first class of Master Coaches, first Class of Recognized Program Directors and became a Recognized Executive Director. My fellow professionals recognized me with the following awards: Growth of the Game, Junior Golf Leader, and Teacher of the Year, Horton Smith (Education of fellow professionals). I served as a National Trainer for The First Tee Coach Training Program.
As a golf professional, I have always enjoyed teaching/coaching golf more than any aspect of the business. With the freedom retirement provides, I have focused my coaching through PGA HOPE and women's groups. I am very thankful for this opportunity to be of service in this way.
